Description

The art of carpet weaving was introduced to India, probably by the great tycoon Akbar (1556-1605) who brought Persian weavers, along with skilled artists mainly for the production of carpets for his palace. During the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, many fine rugs were woven here from the finest sheep wool and silk, with Persian patterns. Quality sank during the 19th century and into the mid-20th century, with the exception of a few smaller productions in the cities of Srinagar, Amritsar and Agra. After independence in 1947, commercial construction was reborn. Even though most of the weavers moved to Pakistan, they came back into operation thanks to the gathering for the training of young men and women. Today the country is a very large exporter of cheap, handmade rugs that differ in quality and are often made with classic Persian and Chinese patterns. To say the origin of an Indian carpet is often used a prefix: Gabbeh Indo which is very different from a Persian Gabbeh for example. Other carpets from India are sold under the names of Amritsar, Bhadohi, Jaipur, Kashmir, Srinagar and Mirsapur.
