QUM
Near a dried-up river, about 150 kilometers south of Tehran, lies the city of Ghom. It is the second holiest city in Iran and an important religious center with extensive priest education. The sister of the eighth imam is buried in a majestic mausoleum located in this city. The construction of carpets began in the 20th century. Ghom rugs are known for their excellent quality of construction in a pile of wool or silk. These are often made with a high density of knots and have a variety of designs, borrowed from various parts of Iran. Sometimes the items are made of silk. They are also often carpets made entirely of silk. Gardens, pendants or schematic rugs with plant and animal motifs are common. Today, rugs made in other places are also called Ghom. The rugs are also sold under the names Ghome, Gom, ghoum, Kum and Kom.
