Afghanistan is located in southern Asia, bordering Iran and Turkmenistan to the west, Uzbekistan and Tadzjikistan in the north, along with Pakistan and China to the east. Two of the most popular carpets from Afghanistan are Khal Mohammadi and Aqche Afghanistan. Khal Mohammadi are handmade by the Turkomans in northern Afghanistan, and in some cases may also be hand-woven in Pakistan by the Turkomans who have crossed the border into Pakistan. The basic colors are dark red in various shades. Usually the patterns are Gols (elephant, standard) and octagonal (eight shapes) often with curvilinear flowers in dark blue, ocher and beige. Afghanistan Aqche rugs are handmade by Turkomans in central and northern Afghanistan.
